A patent is a specific way of publishing research findings. If the research result is a technical invention that is new, original, and fundamentally industrially applicable, there is generally nothing standing in the way of obtaining a patent. However, patents do not necessarily have to be the foundation for starting a business, as innovative business ideas can also be protected through other means and lead to the creation of a spin-off.

“Too complicated” is the common misconception often associated with the patenting and startup process. The Information Center for Technology and Patents (ITP) and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Transfer (CET) demonstrate that this prejudice is unfounded, that TU Dortmund University offers comprehensive services for patenting, and that inventors not only have obligations but also tangible benefits from patenting their inventions—or access to tailored support services at TU Dortmund University.
