Zotero

The reference management program Zotero is a free software that helps students and researchers to collect, organize, annotate, cite and share literature.
Zotero can be used with Mac, Windows, Linux and via the app for iOS and iPadOS. An app for Android is in progress.

Installation, Account and Storage

  • Download the latest version of Zotero.
  • Please install the Zotero Connector browser add-on to save references and PDF documents directly from your browser to Zotero.
  • Information for iPad and iPhone users:
    To use Zotero on your iPad or iPhone, please download the Zotero app from the App Store. The first time you use the app, create a free Zotero account. The Connector is not required on iPad or iPhone.
  • The plugin for working with your word processor (Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, GoogleDocs) is automatically installed. For LaTeX, we recommend the Better BibTeX (BBT) plugin.
  • Additional plugins can be installed on request.
  • If you only want to work locally, a Zotero account is not absolutely necessary.
  • To use and synchronize Zotero on different devices, you need a free account (terms of use, information on data protection). It can be created with any e-mail address.
  • Working locally:
    The storage for bibliographic data is unlimited, attachments such as PDF files can be saved in any size and number.
  • Working with synchronization between different devices:
    The synchronization of bibliographic data ("Data Sync") is not subject to any limit, that of attachments ("File Sync") is limited to 300 MB with a free account.

  • Training classes: The University Library regularly offers training classes for all members of TU Dortmund University (in German). These courses are suitable for anyone with little or no knowledge of Zotero. Main focus: Creating a reference collection, creating a bibliography, creating citations, using the Word add-in. Please register for an appointment!
  • Workshop at HyLeC: This is a hybrid offer; the workshop can be attended both on site at HyLeC and online Zotero - Easy Start.
  • Additional dates on request: We offer individual trainings for groups, chairs or seminars of 5 or more people. We are happy to tailor the content to your wishes and needs. Please contact us to arrange an appointment!
