In 2021, the extensive private collection of Dortmund-based American studies scholar Prof. Dr. Walter Grünzweig was donated to Dortmund University Library.

The collection comprises around 4,000 volumes of primary and secondary literature on North American literary history of the 19th and 20th centuries. The core collection of authors' literature is supplemented by secondary literature with a thematic focus on Anglo-American cultural history.

Due to its special features, this collection has already been an "extra" in several feature films, including "Hannah Arendt" by Margarethe von Trotta (2012).

The collection, which was named in memory of the important US politician and presidential candidate George McGovern (1922-2012), is a self-contained ensemble that will not be added to.

Use of Library Collection

The collection available for loan can be found in the Emil-Figge-Bibliothek under the call numbers JC 1 (author literature) and JC 2 (secondary literature).

Further monographs are located in the rare book collection and can be requested from the storage facility for viewing, but cannot be borrowed.
