Follow-up: "Insights into Scientific Publishing"

On June 10, the UA Ruhr event “Insights into Scientific Publishing by IEEE” took place at the Erich Brost Institute. The several-hour-long discussion, conducted in English, focused on global trends in scientific publishing and addressed topics such as the role of open access and AI in the publication process.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is not only the world’s largest technical professional association but also a major engineering publisher. As part of a roadshow across Germany on the topic of scientific publishing and Open Access, the team made stops in Munich, Hamburg, and Dortmund.
The IEEE Global Product Manager examined the development of scientific publishing from a global perspective and drew comparisons with Germany. Globally, the volume of publications is growing, which poses several challenges, including for the peer-review process. The share of open-access publications continues to rise in Germany and Europe, while globally it is stagnating.
The lively discussion addressed questions such as whether and how authors are permitted to use AI in the publication process, or how the use of AI must be indicated. Ultimately, the responsibility always lies with the authors.
