The OECD takes a closer look: "Education at a Glance 2025" publishes the latest data on educational attainment and opportunities in the 38 current OECD member countries.

Following the PISA study, the focus is now on the education system as a whole. With “Education at a Glance 2025,” the OECD has published current data and analyses on educational attainment, educational opportunities, and educational pathways in its member states.

Although the proportion of young adults with a college degree in Germany has risen from 33% to 40%, it remains below the OECD average. At the same time, the proportion of low-skilled young adults is rising to 15 percent. Germany has the widest skills gap between the highly educated and the low-skilled of all OECD countries. Family background continues to have a strong influence on educational opportunities. In Germany, a college degree offers little more protection against unemployment than a high school diploma, but on average leads to 50% higher earned income.
