The University Library's publication fund has been providing authors at TU Dortmund University with financial support for a decade to publish articles in open access journals.

For many authors at TU Dortmund University, open access publishing is now a matter of course. It increases the visibility of publications and is required or at least desired by many third-party funders. The publication fund, which has been financially supported by the German Research Foundation since 2016, has been supporting them for ten years now. This fund is used to support articles in genuine open access journals that are published under the responsibility of TU Dortmund University members.

The University Library manages the fund and offers TU Dortmund University researchers an all-round package: from advice on the seriousness of journals and copyright issues to very practical assistance in finding their way around publishing portals and invoicing. For example, since the end of 2024, the University Library has taken over the invoicing of all costs incurred in the context of publications.

The increasing popularity of the fund can also be seen from the fact that the number of funded articles has risen significantly over the past 10 years: from just under 20 articles in 2015 to over 50 articles in 2024, there were almost 400 publications in total, including 19 in the highly respected multidisciplinary journal Nature Communications.

Specific requests for financial support often result in intensive consultations that go beyond the topic of open access, e.g. on the visibility of one's own research achievements. Here, too, the University Library offers advice with its bibliometric advice center and operates an important infrastructure with the university bibliography, from which publication lists for the websites of scientists can be easily created.
